Assault on Pocket Knives
Question:
Yeah, I read that too…..wonder how they are going to enforce that! Everybody through the metal-detector? "Please arrive at least two hours early of your expected time of entry to the park" Bill W Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

In our local school system, kids are suspended for bringing fingernail clippers to school (and any other type of object that can cut). That’s over-reacting. My Buck Crosslock Hunter, with it’s thumb actuated flip open blade, the closest thing I’ve seen to a switchblade, is a "pocket" knife, but I have no business carrying it around at a State Fair. The 2 1/2" Swiss Army knife that I carry on my keychain, with it’s microscopic blade, scissors, nail cleaner, toothpick and tweezers, is something I wouldn’t want to be without. It would be interesting to find out where the officials draw the line on "pocketknives". Lena Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I know you are joking with your final comment Bill, but yes, everyone who enters the State Fair of Texas goes thru a hand held metal detector, it was on the news tonight. And all pocket knifes are suspect. Even my 2 inch blade obvious "pocket" knife. Even so, enjoy the corn dogs dave

Please explain why? Would the possession of it at a state fair motivate you do something harmful? Does it jump out of your pocket and tend to attack people when it is carried at state fairs? Please don’t take this as sarcastic, but I don’t understand the logic. It ain’t the tool, it’s the person! There are plenty of things at fairs that are more dangerous, and can be used to harm others, than your Buck knife. Just think of what might have happened if the folks on the flight that crashed in PA had knives. Reminds me of the Crocodile Dundee (sp?) movie: "thats not a knife–this is a knife". Another issue of carrying a knife is saving lives. How would you like to be at the scene of an accident where having your knife to cut them free would have saved them, but you left it home because "I have no business carrying it around at a (whatever)"? Watch them die because you did not "feel" you should be carrying your knife? John Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

**** Security to be tighter at this year’s State Fair By SELWYN CRAWFORD / The Dallas Morning News Fairgoers and their vehicles will be subject to searches by State Fair security officers, officials said. No weapons will be permitted on the fair grounds, including pocketknives, scissors or other sharp objects. **** Just how are pocketknives going to pose a viable threat at the State Fair of Texas? I can understand not having a pocket knife on an airplane, but at the state fair? I can read the headlines now, "Funnel Cake Stand Taken Over By Terrorists, Crashed into Salt Water Taffy Stand" The only thing at the state fair that might constitute needing protection would be the big-a**ed ferris wheel, and other than knocking it over, there’s not much you can do with it and you’re going to need a large vehicle, not a pocket knife, to do it. I figure it’s time to say people are over-reacting. Yes, it’s a scary time in America, yes, people should be vigilant, but take away the pocket knives? Yes, no concealed handguns at the state fair, no pocket knives at the state fair, just 200,000 completely defenseless people, ringed by a 100 scattered police officers and a few security guards.
