V8 Swap
Question:
Does anybody know if a 302 or 351 engine will fit in my 94 Explorer sport. If so do you know where I could have it done. I live in Miami, FL but I’m willing to take it cross country to have it done if possible. I already talked to Steeda who is close by here but they said they dont do engine swaps!?!?!!! Also do you know if Ford plans on bringing out in the future an Explorer sport with the V8? Any information would be helpful. Thank you. Mark
Response:
Ford said that it couldn’t fit the V8 into the engine bay of the earlier Explorers because of the twin I-beam suspension. When they switched over to the independent suspension they were able to shove the 302 into it.

I am also interested in this engine swap. I know that a 302 will fit I have seen some one braging that they did this but, when I asked him how he got real quiet. I want to put a 302 in my ‘92 Navajo so please be cool and help out a fellow explorer owner. If I did it I would tell everone here. I’ve seen this conversion a few times. Any Ford small block V-8 fits in there. The problem with the front suspension interference can be solved with creative work on the oil pan. — Paul O’Gorman Boeing (BCAG) 777 division 93 Explorer Sport 4×4 97 Neon SOHC 16v

Explorers……. A few years ago before Ford came out with the new V8 Explorers there was a company in California doing 302 swaps into early Explorers. It definately can be done. The dealers were even talking about it up here in Seattle. I don’t have a clue now what the name of the company was. That series of brain cells has long since abandoned ship. Seems like it would be much easier to just bolt on one of the supercharger kits available. And they’re showing up used now on the web for pretty cheap. Just a thought. Dewey

I seem to recall that Ford used a low profile induction system a la Cobra to make the 302 fit. Mike
Response:
Ford plans to stop making the sport in favor of a smaller Jap fighting SUV.
