Location of premium radio's amplifier?

Question:

The wiring harness you buy with a new deck will actually use the reciever amp (not much wattage) and the built in amp (even less). Ask your car stereo shop to get the harness for the Explorer premium sound system. They are out their, I had one for a long time. Matt – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Yeah, he’s right. Yeah, he’s right. It’s a real pain in the ass opening that panel. I never had any problems with the amp while I had it, but if your getting no volume, it sounds like a deck problem, or a bad wire. Ford uses the crappiest wiring to set up their stereos, and they easily go bad. Matt

Never took out the factory receiever, but with the Premium sound setup is it possible to bypass the factory amp and use the amp built into a replacement receiever ?  What I’m asking is does Ford provide an AMP bypass on the wiring harness ?  Also do you know what are the powe specs on the factory amp ? I haven’t heard of any common problems with the amp but I do know where it is.  The amp is located behind the interior panel in the rear compartment on the passenger’s side.  Just front of the little netted storage compartment. I haven’t been in there myself but I understand it is not a quick job taking the panel off and getting in there.  You should probably set aside a few hours. I’m trying to track down an audio problem (almost nonexistent volume)  with the radio/cassette player in my ‘93 Explorer. The radio has four pairs of wires feeding a coax connector, so apparently this is the "Premium" radio, and uses an external amplifier. Does anyone know the physical location of this external amp?  Is it prone to failure, or does the preamp in the radio usually go first? Lou
