'93 A4LD Tranny Problem – Late Shifts
Question:
I’ve got a ‘93 Explorer XLT 4×4 with the A4LD transmission. The transmission is shifting very late from 1st to 2nd. It does this at all times, whether hot or cold. The Ford dealership wants to check the governor, but I don’t think that can be the problem, due to the continued late shift when warmed up. Also, I changed the governor and modulator less than a year ago. The transmisison doesn’t slip, and when at highway speeds, works fine. Overdrive locks up fine. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rich
Response:
Here’s what the shop manual says for "Rough/Harsh/Delayed 1-2 upshift" Improper fluid level. Poor engine performance. Kickdown linkage misadjusted. Intermediate band out of adjustment. Main control pressure too high. Governor valve sticking. Damaged intermediate servo. Engine vacuum leak, Valve body bolts loose/too tight. Valve body dirty/sticking valves. Vacuum leak to diaphragm unit. Vacuum diaphragm bent, sticking, leaks. Charlie

Some of these I can rule out. Some others I would like to check. But a couple I’m not sure how.
> Here’s what the shop manual says for "Rough/Harsh/Delayed 1-2 upshift" > Improper fluid level.
The fluid level is fine. > Poor engine performance.
Seems to run no differently than before. > Kickdown linkage misadjusted.
I think my Haynes manual describes how to do this. I’ll try this. > Intermediate band out of adjustment.
I’d like to try this, but don’t know how. If anybody could explain this I’d appreciate it. > Main control pressure too high.
Can I test this? > Governor valve sticking.
I checked this. I thought this was the problem originally. > Damaged intermediate servo.
How can I check this? > Engine vacuum leak,
I would hope that the Ford garage checked the vaccuum here, but who knows. What is the proper vaccuum to the modulator? > Valve body bolts loose/too tight.
What is the torque on these bolts? Haynes doesn’t give much info about transmissions, just how to remove and install the whole unit. > Valve body dirty/sticking valves.
Can I just remove the whole unit, clean it up, and stick it back in? What am I getting into here? > Vacuum leak to diaphragm unit.
Same as above. > Vacuum diaphragm bent, sticking, leaks.
I replaced the modulator about a year ago. But I guess it could be bad. I’ll pull it out and check. Thanks for any information.
