WEHT Dr. Bob

Question:

What ever happen to Dr. Bob.  Did this explorer battery blow up while he was doing his routine maint. of disconnecting it to reset the computer to prevent engine pinging? Perphaps the Explorer fell on him while he was doing his routine 7500 mile brake caliper pin lubrication… Just kidding, but I really miss his insight and expert advice.

AND HOW!  I have received some very valuable information from Dr. Bob in the early years of the Explorer. May he never fade away! BOBB

I know Dr. Bob is still around, although I don’t know how often he reads this forum any more.  I used to participate here quite often, but have not been reading newsgroups much for the past few years.  I’m back temporarily though to see if anyone has the same problems I’m having… Bryan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> >What ever happen to Dr. Bob.  Did this explorer battery blow up while he >  was > >doing his routine maint. of disconnecting it to reset the computer to > >prevent engine pinging? > >Perphaps the Explorer fell on him while he was doing his routine 7500 >  mile > >brake caliper pin lubrication… > Dr. Bob was cool.  he probably helped over 50% of the people in this >  newsgroup. > Dan. > — > RVD…The Whole F’n Show > i was bored one day and ended up making http://www.hanguk.com/~danpaik > Ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-so > AND HOW!  I have received some very valuable information from Dr. Bob in the > early years of the Explorer. Dr. Bob says he’s doing fine.  He said his Explorer is doing fine, although it’s suffering a little from the miles he’s put on it.  It hasn’t fallen on him (yet), and the caliper slides are not rusty.  He’s spending about 60% of his work time on the road so he hasn’t had the time to see if his new ISP (Charter) has a news server, and he hasn’t gotten around to loading a newsreader on any of his recent computers. — University of California, Irvine       phone:       949-824-6926 Network & Academic Computing Services  FAX:         949-824-2069

So five+ years ago I bought a Porsche 928.  Not a car that I’d been lusting after or anything, this one just kinda landed on me.  It has replaced the Explorer as a daily driver for the most part. Performance is slightly better than the Explorer ever-so-slightly. Shortly after that, I sold my interest in the engineering group and moved on to what I thought would be semi-retirement.  That lasted a few months, but I was bored and some friends in the industry invited me to come play on some of their projects.  So I’ve been off to some of the finer spots in the country and the world, having fun and working.  During that time I changed computers (had to leave the old one with the company…) and didn’t take the time to find a new news service or install a newsreader.  Web-based usenet is the pits, by the way, compared with a real newsreader. I appreciate all your words of kindness, and do miss a lot of the relationships built up during those early years of the RAMFE group. I haven’t spoken with Mike Shirley (founder of the group here…) in several years since he sold his Explorer and bought my Toyota pickup as a work/commuter ride.  The knowledge learned and shared during those years was terrific.  Now most of those early cars are gone, and the problems and challenges of the newer ones are different.  The Ford factory guys offered to let me come watch them build a new one for me, but I never took them up on it.  Probably should have since my ‘92 now has 177k on it.  Still has the original transmission in it for those keeping score, including more than a few dashes from L.A. to Arizona every summer with the boats on the back, and at least that many runs every winter to Mammoth for skiing.  I have a service to-do list that’s waiting for my new garage to be done at the new house.  We are adding a 14×24 bay to the existing 22×24 garage, big and tall enough to have a service lift if I get around to it. Oh well, I’m rambling some.  Must be the grey hair.  Can’t be the age, must be the mileage! Take care all.  I’ll stick my nose in every once in a while, so keep it clean around here. Cheers! dr bob

Thanks Dr. Bob, and best wishes! You were of immeasurable help to me with the 1992 and 1995 Ford Explorers, the latter of which is soon to leave our stable after many happy years as a primary and backup vehicle. Bob, I can recall so many happy road trips that were taken with complete peace of mind knowing that I had followed your advice for maintenance. There will no doubt be many early Ford Explorers on the road for years to come. Your advice and expertise is therefore timeless, and I am pleased to routinely direct others to your archived knowledge, which is indexed and searchable using the term "dr bob" at: http://groups.google.com Happy Trails and Fair Skies!
