Response:

250,000+ miles. Yes, really. Now the real question is how many transmissions (autos at least.  The 5 speeds are reliable once you get past the rubber-plug years (94?) will you go through in that 250k.  :) As for mine. 11.5 years, 195,000 miles, it still runs like new. JS

Response:

I’ve heard the 4.0 liter engine is pretty bullet-proof. I have 185,000 on my 1993 Explorer.  It runs great and uses no oil at all. In fact, the engine has been pretty carefree.  Basically, I’ve replaced the fan clutch, the heater blower motor, the radius arm bushings, clutch, clutch slave cylinder.  That’s about it.  I’ve had to tighten the lower intake manifold bolts (I try to do this every couple years).  But, I’ve had no problems with the MAF sensor, IAC solenoid, etc. that others have reported having problems with.  I’ve also had no problems with the power windows, which some folks have reported having problems.

I’ve got 120870 miles right now on my 96 OHV, and no problems.  No leaking around the heads, gaskets, seals, etc…  Runs strong.  The only thing that I think *might* need work is the transfer case and/or the tranny (syncros) but otherwise I have had no problems, (none) since the day I bought it with 69000 miles on it, almost three years ago.  I just do the regular fluid changes, and recently noticed my serpentine belt is a little cracked here and there. Good luck!

Response:

You can call your ford dealer with the VIN number of that truck and ask them to see if there are any recalls or campains that havent been done on that truck…

Given normal driving conditions, how many miles/kilometers does a 4.0 OHV usually accept before needing a major overhaul. The truck I am looking at has about 220000kms(about 120000mi). Seems tight, and engine sounds great and smooth…         Thanks         Chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Ok, so I didn’t find a V8 explorer, but I did find a 95 Ranger XLT. 4.0 >V6, Auto, full load, etc. >Any particular things on a 95 4.0 I need to look out for? Response:

I believe what you are referring to is related to the SOHC engine design.  What you have I believe is the OHV engine. Otherwise, no issues I can think of.  Look up this model vehicle on the NHTSA.org website under Recalls. r/ -IanCT

Both of these problems are only found on the 4.0 SOHC.  This is the overhead cam 4.0 engine.  The 4.0 OHV didn’t exhibit these problems – engine is damn near bulletproof except 1991 and earlier models had some head casting issues. I don’t think the 4.0 SOHC was an option on the Ranger until at least MY2001. JS

Ok, so I didn’t find a V8 explorer, but I did find a 95 Ranger XLT. 4.0 V6, Auto, full load, etc.         Any particular things on a 95 4.0 I need to look out for? I’ve read a number of posts talking about intake gasket problems and cam tensioners; can anyone speak to these issues in a bit more detail?         Thanks         Chris
