96 Explorer fine when cool, hard to get 3rd and 4th when warmed up help!
Question:
For about 15 minutes of driving my explorer it’s fine. Then if I have to slow down and speed up again (like city driving), I have to GENTLY coax it into 3rd, at which point it’ll be fine (goes into 4th just dandy). I have to basically gently let off on the gas and keep trying (slowly) and it’ll go into 3rd after a few tries. If I try too hard, it gets real rough. Since all the gears work fine once you’re in them, what can this be? Took it to a tranny shop, and of course they said I need a rebuild (I think he actually has this on his answering machine). Is it a seal somewhere that is not allowing proper pressure of the tranny fluid? Any hope I can fix this without spending $1800!!?? I know I have a slight rear seal leak, and even a slight leak on the fluid pan. I had the tranny flushed (after this started, to try and help things). Didn’t help. I didn’t change the filter, can’t imagine that it’s the cause. Any suggestions? Should I have any hope? Why hasn’t ford recalled this entire vehicle?
Response:
I live north of San Francisco, Mine does this only when I make the drive to San Diego and it gets hot out. City driving, same condition as yours. When I’m in San Diego, it does it all the time. I can’t get into 1st, 2nd, from a stop, I have to wiggle it back and forth, or shift it into 4th and then right into 1st (clutch still depressed) and it will go in. When I’m back home again, (real cool climate) it never does it. I believe it’s the synchros that need to be replaced, so a tranny rebuild would be worth it. My buddy’s 94 Ranger (same engine, and same tranny too I believe?) does the same thing, except his just stopped being able to shift at all. Could not get it into any gear. He did have the tranny rebuilt and the synchros were culprit. Good luck! I’m sure I’ll have to do a rebuild by 150k. Have 112k on it right now, still original clutch too. -IanCT ‘96 XLT 4WD 4Dr.
