Ford Quality Care Maintenance Protection Plan

Question:

I’m picking up my new ‘99 this weekend and was wondering if any of you have purchased the Ford Quality Care Maintenance Protection Plan and have found it to be worthwhile. Apparently for $925(no sales tax), this is what you get:  - extends the factory warranty from 36000 miles    to 45000 miles (still 3 years)  - oil changes every 5000 miles at any ford dealer  - all scheduled maintenance at 15K,30K,40K miles  - normal wear replacement on shocks, clutch, belts    and hoses, brake pads & linings, wiper blades I figure the 5K oil changes are worth $45 each (10x$45=$450) The scheduled maintenance are worth $125 each (3x$125=$375) so $100 to extend the warranty another 9000 miles? Any advice on this? Are my figures right?  Is it worth getting? thanks Sonny Vulture

Response:

Personally, it sounds like a rip off.  First off, it’s not much of an "extension" and it still comes up short from the "mean time to failure" of the emission parts, EGR, O2 sensors, etc… it sounds to me that a "package" like the one they are offering for nearly $1000, should be covered under a normal warranty.  I assure you though, there is a very good reason from Ford to stop that offer at 45,000 miles.  Try this though, tell them you’ll buy the truck if they throw in the extended warranty for nothing, as an indication that Ford stands behind their product! Yeah I was about to get this maintenance protection..It does sound like a good deal. But I didn’t want to go to the dealer where I got the explorer from. I like this other ford place better when having problems..another thing you might think about a lot of these dealers has site’s that offer discounts on oil changes..like I go to koons site and can get coupons for oil changes for only $9.99 and they usually have different kinds of discounts..Hope this help..GILPIN – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I’m picking up my new ‘99 this weekend and was >wondering if any of you have purchased the Ford >Quality Care Maintenance Protection Plan and >have found it to be worthwhile. >Apparently for $925(no sales tax), this is what you get: > – extends the factory warranty from 36000 miles >   to 45000 miles (still 3 years) > – oil changes every 5000 miles at any ford dealer > – all scheduled maintenance at 15K,30K,40K miles > – normal wear replacement on shocks, clutch, belts >   and hoses, brake pads & linings, wiper blades >I figure the 5K oil changes are worth $45 each (10x$45=$450) >The scheduled maintenance are worth $125 each (3x$125=$375) >so $100 to extend the warranty another 9000 miles? >Any advice on this? In addition to the items you listed, I went through two complete brake jobs in the first 3 years and the regularly scheduled maintainence was far more than your estimated $125 pr. visit.  My dealer had difficulty finding the paperwork to process my request for the contract. My understanding is that this is not a profit item for Ford.  It is a loss leader to earn your alligence.  I would always seek out the opportunity to pruchase one of these again!

That warrenty is nothing more than a badly worded, insurance policy made by people who have no goverment oversight.   Besides, its a giant profit maker….the warranty is only wholesale to the dealer about $150.       The dealer should be able to throw it in anyway.  Same with floor mats (cost: 20$retail 75$) window tinting (cost 50$ retail: 150$) etc.  I would also get an alarm thrown in also. (cost $75 retail: 220$)   If they don’t take the deal, there are 10 thousand more dealers out there!

Response:

I did some research on the cost of the 30K service, which varies from $400-$550 in the SF bay area.  The 15K & 45K service are $150 each, so this made this plan hard to pass up.  30K = $400 (at the cheapest ford dealer)  $270+$300+$400 = $970  price of maint plan = $925 (no sales tax added!)  so without even considering the 9K warranty extension, it appears  to be a wash – and I can use any ford dealer. Thanks for the advice! Skip the maintenance plan, go with the true extended warranty (to 75K miles).  Oil & filter plus lube should run about 25 dollars, (absolutely do the first oil and filter change at about 500 miles, yes five hundred miles), I assume its not a lease and you want to keep it for awhile.  As far as the normal wear replacement of items you mentioned, is that for the 45K milage limit?  Nothing there "should" wear out in 45K miles. Good luck with the vehicle.

Response:

I picked up both ESP plans (Warranty and Maint).  I chose the top Premium Care Warranty. Negotiate a lower price.  They are negotiable either directly or indirectly. The Maintenance Plan pays for itself with Oil, Lube, Filters, Belts, Hoses Etc Etc.  Plus they rotate tires and do an inspection of all parts that only Ford technicians would know what to look for.  Also you get the added bonus of having a Ford Certified Repair Transcript printed out when you go to sell the car which makes it a hell of a lot more valuable during resale or trade-in. Lets get real here.  You buy a new car for $30-45k another $900 bucks is nothing in the grand scheme and there are only plus’s. People who buy new cars and try to save a few hundred dollars by only getting Service from Jiffy lube will suffer more with unforeseen problems and a lower resale value. I also purchased the Extended Premium Care Warranty.  This is a little more pricey but I bought it for piece of mind. It covered everything, and I mean everything from the front to the back, electronics to plastics. I use to enjoy (and still do) working on my vehicles.  But family, work, and personal life prohibits me from doing certain things and now I find little time to tinker with even the most minor of details. So, if my explorer even so much as hickups the wrong way I can bring it in and have someone else do the work and it costs me NOTHING. I bought a 98 explorer limited with a ton of options and accessories.  So the price tag was pricey.  The extra $1200 for the Premium Care (Or do they call it Platinum Care ?  Whatever, its the most inclusive they had) for me was worth it. Again, here the resale value will be higher.  Why ? I bought a 6 Year/75k Warranty.  I plan on selling the truck either year 4 or year 5.  The Warranty is transferable to any new owner.  So Not only will they have a Ford Certified Service History, but also a Ford Warranty for another 1-2 years in case anything does go wrong, making the truck a preferred purchase as a used vehicle. And getting a better resale value for me. My suggestion … Don’t scrimp ever on any new car purchase.  It will bite you later down the line. Rich
