1992 Ford Explorer Power Windows Problems???

Question:

I’m trying to remember if the wiring for the 92 is similar to the newer versions but not having much luck…. Even then (if all the windows are UP), the only thing we are sure of is that they wont go DOWN. Since you have power to the master switch, I can’t see there being a supply problem. With the key on and engine off, try moving the drivers window switch to the UP position while watching the dome lamp to see if it dims a little when you operate the switch. You may need to recheck the other door switches making sure you are getting a good ground for the test light – I prefer using a long patch cord for this kind of stuff and go straight to the battery negative. Two things throwing me a curve are no power at the rest of the switches (should be on one post each) and the fact that the drivers window doesn’t work either….. the two symptoms just aren’t connecting (pardon the pun). I’ll go out on a limb and say that there’s a better than even chance that there is at least one (probably two) broken wires in the bellows on the door jamb….. Let me know what you find with the dome light and the test light suggestions.. — Jim Warman

I’ve got the electrical trouble shooting manual for 92. It shows that main power to the window switch is light blue with a black stripe. Power gets to it by way of  fuse #14 in the interior fuse panel. That’s a 30 amp fuse. This fuse does NOT control power to the radio or mirrors. You should get power at that point with the ignition switch at either run or accessory. Charlie

Jim: No, none of the switches work. There is no power to any of the switches. Well, there is power to the thick brown wire that is in the middle of the main (drivers side), but thats about it. Power locks, side mirrors and radio all work fine. Any suggestions? RK

VL: No, everything else works fine. Radio works, power locks work, power side mirrors work fine. I emailed "Ron", from another post somewnere on this message board, about the relay probability and here is what he said: Hi, the relay is easily accessed.  It is directly below the dash.  If you start on the driver’s side of the center console, follow it down to where the dash ends, it is located in a box right there.  You have to open it. Mine had tape around it.  There are two relays as I recall, one is for the windows.  Let me know how you make out.  Ron I’m going to check that as soon as I can. I’ll post my findings here. If anyone else has any ideas, please feel free to share the knowledge… RK

I have been reading the information on this board ever since my windows stopped working, unfortunately I need more help. I called the Ford dealer here in Hawaii and he told me that there was no GEM for the 1992 Explorer?!? Is that true? Is he an idiot, or am I asking the wrong questions (which would make me the idiot)? To give you a background of how everything started, this is it: First my windows would make this cluncking noise…window motors! I checked the board and found out why, those crappy plastic "things" that the motor is supposed to use to turn itself decided to become tiny little crumbs. I replaced those with metal spacers from Lowes and they worked fine. Only one of my windows did that, but I decided to do all of my window motors, just to same me the hassle of taking the door panels off agian. They have been working fine until one day, they all stopped working! I checked the newsgroup again but I just can’t find what I need. All the Explorers here aer newer than the one I have (1992 XLT). Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated. Can anyone out there in Cyberland help me out??? If I am not giving you enough info, please let me know, I’ll be sure to provide anything you need. RK

I have a 93 Limited. I also had a driver window problem last year. I’ve replaced the motor and everything is find for now. As far as I know, there is no GEM in the Explorer before 95 or 96 … If all the windows stopped to work at the same time I would suspect a fuse. Is there any other accessories that stopped to work? When the fuse problem happened on mine, the remote door lock and the radio did stop to work also. Hope this help. VL
