Which type of tires?

Cross Terrains are quieter – they have a solid outside rib. I put 55k miles on a set of LTX M/S and now have Cross Terrains. IMHO, the Cross Terrains are better in every on-road condition, even in snow. Well worth the extra $10 per tire over the LTX M/Ss.

Richard Grimes Well it looks like Michelin is the way to go. I contacted several tire dealers and they ALL said to put the Michelin’s on the truck. So thanks for the advice. I’m sorry for not replying sooner but we just came back from a vacation in the Smoky Mts. Just a funny note, reading this news group can make a person overly paranoid. The "diesel" sound my explorer made going up the mountains disappeared when the vehicle behind me stopped at a scenic overlook. And the LOUD thumping sound in the hotel parking lot while the Explorer was warming up turned out to be a kid sitting on the pavement two cars over dribbling a basketball to annoy his parents. I "know" both of these are poor designing by Ford. I think Ford had something to do with the high hotel bills also but we are not for sure. Other than that everything went fine, even the 2.5 hour traffic snarl around Knoxville, TN. Hey, if the truck can go 2-5 MPH for 2.5 hr. with a/c on hi, I have no problems!! Thanks again Richard Grimes

Richard: I bit the bullet and bought a set of Michelin LTX M/S "P-Metric" tires two years ago. I love them, they are very quiet and have good grip on the road. When I go off road I’m still quite confident (the 4×4is there if I need it). The Michelin tires also smoothed out the little bit of shaking that I had. They are much more "round" than the Dunlops that I had. I run them at 30psi F/R normally and 30F 32R when loaded and pulling the boat.
