OBD II code?

Question:

Richard Grimes Hello Everyone,   My wife’s 1999 Explorer XLS "check engine" light came on yesterday.  I took it to our friendly (really) Auto Zone to read the code. The code is "P1451 manufactor specific" . I was planning to buy whatever part needed replacing but my Haynes Repair Manual did not list this error.  I will try to contact the Ford dealer Monday but thought someone might know.  Any help would be appreciated.   Thank you Richard Grimes

Response:

Richard Grimes    I’ve read this group long enough to know to list the engine size, Richard Grimes

Response:

Probably a problem with the cannister vent solenoid….. check the gas cap first, though. Being an old fart, I still shake my head in wonder over this "hers" and "mine" stuff, rather than the more traditional "ours" concept. Richard Grimes Thanks Jim,    I will check it out.  BTW She got to pick the color on the explorer and I got to pick the color on the SuperCrew. <grin> Richard

Cheer up… I didn’t get to pick the colour on anything…. aside from the fact that I am totally bereft of any "colour sense"…. Leather black, denim blue, tool box red and whatever colour fire truck the town buys are about as far as I go…… I can’t tell the difference between white, ivory and eggshell to save my life… — Jim Warman

Response:

Richard Grimes   You were correct about the canister vent solenoid.  The local Ford dealership is ordering one now.  Cost is $35.00.  Do I need any tools out of the ordinary for this job?    My wife looked at the original posting and wondered what this "hers" and "mine" was also.   Double corrected…..that’s bad….       Thanks for the help on OUR explorer. Richard

Response:

To: Jim    Got it fixed this morning while waiting for the part to arrive at the Ford dealership.  The vent solenoid was not snapped into the canister, so snapped that back in.  However upon giving the bottom side of the truck a quick inspection while it was up in the air I noticed a real problem!  Yes, OUR dog/puppy had chewed on the wiring harness under the driver seat.  All were chewed and five were in completely apart.  My son and I reconnected and sealed all of the wires.  We disconnected the battery before starting the wiring project and now the "check/replace" engine light is out.  I’ve got my fingers crossed that nothing else is lurking around to happen.    Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Richard Grimes

Richard Grimes    Boy our must be different, we have two in town and both have checked the codes without any wait, well I did wait my turn in line.  I guess about 5 min max wait time, and then they try to give you all of the information they can, to the point where my wife says "Honey, tell the good man goodbye and let’s go home".  This last time I tried to give the man $5 at least for the effort and he would not take it.  The next time I go by we are going by the donut place first.  I own a small RadioShack store and try to treat other people like I would choose to be treated.  Then again they might be just nice people, I dunno….. I asked them if I should just buy one of the OBD II scanners they sell for $149.99 and they just looked at me like I was crazy and asked why when it was a FREE check!!   I love Alabama. You’re lucky! Here in California, the dealerships & larger car repair places got together and stopped Autozone’s and Kragen’s from performing the check engine light diagnostic, claiming that none of the employees were ASE certified and/or qualified to pull and interpret the codes.  Thus, forcing the consumer back to the dealer so they can charge $150 for 2 minutes of work.  It’s being fought in the courts, but it could take years to get it overturned.  Of course, this is ONLY in California. Also, Autozone’s computers have all the OBD-II codes in them, they should’ve been able to give you a printout of the code.

Eric…. one of the problems the shops were experiencing was the "change my <…..>…" syndrome. The shop would change the <….> and the problem would still be there….. along with a consumer complaint against the shop. I have no personal problems with free code scans other than to tell you that I will only repair conditions I diagnose myself – I refuse to rely on someone elses diagnosis – and the free code scans can often lead consumers to replace unecessary parts. I don’t understand your contention regarding $150 for two minutes work…… a tad inflated, I presume? I must say that it takes training and experience to understand what the codes retrieved are telling us……. — Jim Warman – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> You’re lucky! > Here in California, the dealerships & larger car repair places got together > and stopped Autozone’s and Kragen’s from performing the check engine light > diagnostic, claiming that none of the employees were ASE certified and/or > qualified to pull and interpret the codes.  Thus, forcing the consumer back > to the dealer so they can charge $150 for 2 minutes of work.  It’s being > fought in the courts, but it could take years to get it overturned.  Of > course, this is ONLY in California. > Also, Autozone’s computers have all the OBD-II codes in them, they should’ve > been able to give you a printout of the code. > It’s ridiculus here!!!  30 mins max if ya want your check engine light > checked!  Then they will send out an ole fat Mexican dude who don’t > >Richard Grimes > >Hello Everyone, > >  My wife’s 1999 Explorer XLS "check engine" light came on yesterday.    Oh I forgot to say that no lights have come on in over a week after the "dog ate my explorer" fix.  The dog is still alive and OUR (for Jim’s sake) Explorer seems to be fine. Thanks for all of the help and remember there is no OBD II code for the dog chewing the wiring harness.  Next time maybe someone will drop off a cat. Richard
