HELP rattle noise in front when turning wheel on 1999 Ford explorer?????????????????????? ???????????????
Question:
I still can’t find the problem. Anyone else have any recommendations??
Response:
Make sure your floor mat is not up against the steering shaft. If my floor mat on my 98 gets to close to the shaft the joint on the shaft thumps the mat when I turn. Woody

Response:
I’ve noticed that my Explorer is make a rattle type noise when I turn the wheel. I notice it more at crawling speeds. Its a knocking sound in some way. I thinking it is something in the front. It feels like it is coming from the steering mech.’s. Does anyone have any idea what it might be.
Response:
Could be bad wheel bearings or worn ball joints. JS

If it’s a 4X4, it might be good to check the joints.
Response:
Also check the lower steering column shaft, a U-joint type link that connects the steering column to the rack and pinion assembly – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I’ve noticed that my Explorer is make a rattle type noise when I turn >the wheel. I had the same symptoms on my 2001 Exp. Sport. The dealer replaced the ball joints under warranty. I really noticed the issue at slow speeds when applying the brakes. I had to take the service mgr for a ride for them to understand what I was referring to. They initially told me rocks in the tires. To say the least I laughed to. Scott
