ABS always kicks in just before I stop … again.
Question:
95 Explorer Sport. It doesn’t matter what surface – each time I apply the brakes, the ABS kicks in (vibrating sensation)and then I come to a stop. It only lasts for about 1 or two seconds just before I come to a complete stop. In 1999 I took it in with the same problem and the dealership replaced the sensors for $800. It started happening again about 6 months ago. Being afraid of another $800 repair job, I delayed bringing it in until the other day to the same dealership who fixed it in the first place. They wanted $127 just to give me a diagnosis and estimate. They said their work is only guaranteed for 12 months, end of story. Seems unreasobable to me that the sensors would fail twice in 8 years. My questions are: 1 – Anyone had the same problem? 2 – Anyone understand what’s happenning with my ABS? 3 – Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jamie

Drive slower or don’t try to stop at the last minute!!

Jamie, I think you just helped me figure out what it was with my front brakes that was doing that. As the earlier poster mentioned, I’ve been allowing a long time to come to a stop as well. My problem started after I replaced the front drums and pads and bled the brakes though, so I think I missed something there. I’m heading out this morning to drop my car off at the shop though; because even though I might save a few bucks, what the heck would I save if I couldn’t stop properly? I’ve got to wonder though how much those sensors would be at www.fordpartsonline.com . I’ve been pretty impressed with how much lower their prices are than a dealer parts counter (even though I think they’re run by a dealer parts counter). It wouldn’t hurt to check the site out and lookup your ABS parts before hand so when the service guys come back with their quote, you can tell them that you’ll provide the parts! Best of luck, Walter Cox

Thanks for the reply Walter. I checked the site you mentioned and the sensors are about $100. In my case the problem doesn’t seem to be related to any brake work. I think I am just going to disable the ABS for now until I get more opinions. I have no problem paying for quality, legitimate work, I just don’t trust the dealership.
