After 4 years parking facing downhill on my driveway my 97 Explorer fails to start even if it has over 1/4 tank of gas. I have to get down to the level street and it starts right up. Does anyone know if this is a sensor problem, clogged fuel line or something else? This could be a problem when traveling rough or steep back roads. Any experience or suggestions for a fix? Thanks Frank

Frank, This is a complete shot in the dark, but it sounds like any gunk or sediment in the tank gets a first shot at the fuel line while it’s parked uphill. Once you level off, the gunk doesn’t plug the line up. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Could be that maybe the fuel filter has sediment in it that actually plugs the line when pointed downhill and settles down when it’s not. Of course, I’m imagining something like the goo at the bottom of a deep fryer, which I doubt is anything similar to that in a gas tank or gas line (if there’s any thing gunk-like at all.) Anyway, I’d start with the fuel filter and perhaps the fuel pump? Another possibility could be that maybe the engine gets flooded because the angle the truck’s at causes greater fuel flow into the cylinders. Again, this is a guess but thinking that after 4 years, something might wear out to prevent that seems logical. If you haven’t changed your fuel filter, I’d start there because you’re likely due for that one any way. After that, I’d let a good mechanic solve it for you! Best of luck & regards, Walter Cox
