97 Explorer
Question:
I purchased a used 97 Explorer, 2WD, 4D, SOHC, 84,000 miles. I also purchased the extended warranty from Ford for the first 6,000 miles or 6 months. Are there any special problems that I need to watch for and things that I need to have the dealership take a look at? My brother-in-law said to look at the radius arm bushings, A/C clutch bearings, others? It also has recently developed a ping, rattle upon cranking. Has anyone else had this "problem"? Thanks, Vann
Response:
Good luck finding radius arm bushings – 95+ don’t have them. Just to save you some time! :) JH 95 EB – 112K miles – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> to look at the radius arm bushings, A/C clutch bearings, others? It also

the major problems have been the timing chain tensioners, front pinion seal, drivers seat back lever, throttle body. Uh, oh…. my ‘97 XLT has 60K miles and I’ve had the chain rattle, throttle body was fixed by a throttle-stop adjustment, pinion seal and seat back levers replaced two weeks ago. Sounds like I’m good to go for another 60K !! All in all, it has been a very trouble-free vehicle. – John

The other day I went to www.Edmunds.com to looking up 1997 explorers, I have a 97 Eddie Bauer V8. I seen a lot of completes in the explorer post area about the V6 SOHC. Take a look!

Sorry but the HP for 97 will be 205!!! — There is little difference in people, but that difference makes a big difference. The big difference is whether it is positive or negitive. - Clement Stone –

Sorry the NEW 5 speed auto will be with the V6 only. The 5 speed manual trans will come with the old 4.0 V6 and the V8 engine will also be offered. — There is little difference in people, but that difference makes a big difference. If you read some of the other threads in this newsgroup about the low mileage owners are getting with the V8 AWD, a 220 HP V6 that gets ‘reasonable’ (although still lower) mileage should be a winner. That’s about the same power output as the V8 but the engine should be lighter and more efficient. Pete Christy P. T. Christy & Associates, Inc.

No, I *think* I understood the post OK. I use 2×4 most all the time and see no reason to put up with what you call "little gas mileage difference" (even 1 mpg, not to mention more chance of mechanical failure). Now, did you mean to imply that the ‘97 will *not* have a 4×4(high) position? ‘Cause that is what was previously posted. I still think a 4×4(high) is a good option to have–perhaps in addition to 4×4(auto). Phil Rose

I think you misunderstood Glen’s comments. What Ford is doing in 97 is to elimanate the 4×2 mode and go with the control trac 4×4 mode as the main driving position. It will have the 4 low available as well. Ford found that there was little gas mileage difference between 4×2 and 4×4 control trac (4 high). Also, the new v6 for 97 will put out 220hp compared to the current 160hp. That may affect gas mileage though.

A 4×4(high) position would be a great improvement to my ‘96 Explorer!!! I wonder if Ford will offer a way of modifying the *current* Control Trac system to have a 4×4(high) switch??? Or am I the only Control Trac user who isn’t thrilled with the idea of "4×4(auto) if and when the system is good and ready"? In the same vein, I think Ford is planning to take a step *backward* in the ‘97 model *if* it really has eliminated the 4×2 mode. Maybe for only $27,000 they can afford just a 3-position switch…. regardless of what might be best for their customers. — Phil Rose

My Explorer does not like to warm up in the mornings. It will not idle for a long enough time, it accelerates to a high speed and then dies during its warm up. What if anything is causing this? And how could I fix it?
Response:
Sounds like the idle air control valve. Do a Google search and you will find a bunch of information about it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->My Explorer does not like to warm up in the mornings.
