Relay For All Brake Lgts.?

Question:

Hello, I have a 1994 EB Explorer. It was brought to my attention that ALL of my brake lights were out. I replaced all and still none working so…my question…. Is there a relay located under the brake peddle that is also used to cut off the cruise control that would be stopping the brake lights from working. Reason I ask is that I noticed that my cruise control does not stop when brake peddle is applied like it should and I had it replaced once so I thought that maybe it is a dual use relay. Hope this makes sense enough for an old hand to help me out. Thanks, Bill V. WV USA

Bill: I’m don’t know about the relay but, have you checked the brake pedal switch?  I believe that it is refered to as a "BOO" switch.  (Brake On / Off)  It sounds to me like it is broken or misadjusted or a wire loose. HTH, -Steve (‘94 EB 4×4)

Hi Steve, Thanks for the response! Yes I think I had the terminology wrong and I was trying to ask about the stop light switch…or "BOO" switch. I am sorry to say that I don’t have an owners R and R book such as Chilton’s so if you could give me a link on the web or some tips for the installation for the BOO switch I would appreciate it. Would you know if this also terminates the cruise control (if cruise is engaged) when you press the brake peddle? Bill V. WV USA ‘94 EB 4×4

Yes…That was it and I did replace it .OK I had asked for instructions and when I went out to look at it went ahead and changed it. I hope I got it back in the correct sequence though, because I didn’t take a good enough picture in my mind to remember..Grins. thanks, Bill V. WV USA 94 EB 4×4

Bill: I found the same problem with my 93 XLT.  All of the lights went out except the small one over the rear window while following my wife to the filling station one evening.  After she used the turn signal, all of them came back on except the left side.  Using the turn signal again, the right side wouldn’t come on.  Bought a new ‘multifunction switch’ (turn signal switch) from Ford and this fixed the problem.  I disassembled the old one, and found that the factory really slops on the grease over the electrical contacts. Cleaning the contacts to their original ’shiny’ condition, lightly greasing with "silicone dielectric grease" available from auto parts stores, and reassembling, provided me with a spare in case the ‘new’ one decides to fail.  I’ve also found this problem on my 96 Ranger when I had problems with the variable windshield wiper speed control.
