93 Explorer XLT – OEM in-dash CD?
Question:
My 93 Explorer XLT has an in-dash AM/FM/Cassette and am wondering if there might have been an oem AM/FM/CD or AM/FM/CD/Cassette head available for that year – you know, a factory head that just swaps right in and looks stock. I checked www.radiosandmore.com but they only go back to 1994 and there are not even any heads listed for that year.
Response:
I had an Alpine after-market head unit installed in my ‘92 and it fit and worked very well. It would also be worthwhile to check www.crutchfield.com. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >My 93 Explorer XLT has an in-dash AM/FM/Cassette and am wondering if >there might have been an oem AM/FM/CD or AM/FM/CD/Cassette head >available for that year – you know, a factory head that just swaps >right in and looks stock. I don’t think Ford offered an in-dash CD head unit for Explorers in ‘93. I very recently replace my AM/FM/Cassette pre-amp (separate amp), all 4 speakers and the wiring with an Alpine AM/FM/CD 45wpc receiver, JL Audio 5×7 speakers and 14AWG speaker wire. It sounds much, much better than the original unit. I attribute most of the improvement to the speakers. I got the Alpine receiver because I wanted a CD player. BTW, if anyone wants a factory AM/FM/Cassette head unit (w/o amp) and 4 factory speakers, I’ll let’em go cheap.

I checked my factor brochures and a Ford-JBL AM/FM/CD radio was an option in 1991-1994 Explorers. Originally in 1991 only an option in the Eddie Bauer edition, but, also available in the XLT from 1992 on. Check www.car-part.com to search salvage yards with the radios. Prices range from $150-$350. Good Luck!
