'91 Automatic Hubs

Question:

Just wondering if anybody knows if there is a way to change the hubs on a ‘91 explorer 4X4 from the originals ones that need to be reversed to release to ones the release without having to reverse the direction.  Do I need to get a pneumatic set up or something like that to get this effect? Thanks in advanced. Joey

Response:

All hubs (both auto and manual) need to have any "preload" released to allow for disengagement. Backing up a few feet is the best way to ensure that this preload is released allowing the hubs to unlock. OTOH, you could buy something a tad newer with a single locking point in one axle tube…… — Jim Warman

Warn makes manual replacement hubs. You need to get out and manually lock / unlock them, but they are half the price of Ford replacements. I just had a set of manuals installed… Tried them out for the first time last night. Just remember to lock them before you need them. I mad a little labe for myself, and stuck it above the pushbutton… "LOCK HUBS !!!" Matt 1994 XLT "Beg forgiveness, not permission"- An old(er) Aviator, USN, Ret.

I put on the Warn manual hubs on last summer in about one hour per side. I have never done it before. They work great and most important, they work when you need them. The first time my Ford hubs went out I was on a hunting trip and barely made it out of the woods. They were covered by warranty that time. The next time they failed I was in an equally inconvenient situation and since they were not covered by the warranty any more I put on the manuals. I have used them 3 times already this winter. The instructions that came in the box are confusing (they were to me) so the Explorer Maint web site was worthwhile reading before I started the job. Good Luck, Lee 91 Sport 126,000
