1994 Explorer front wheel bearings, help please

Question:

I’d suggest getting the Haynes manual for the vehicle. It has some good photos. The job is not hard, but you should be fairly precise…and YOU CANNOT mess up the key (which gets inserted between the spindle nut and the spindle) or you WILL face the unhappy prospect of having your wheel fall off while you are driving You should have for this: Torque wrench – half inch drive or adapter Spindle nut wrench Magnet or razor blade (to gently pull/coax out the locking key) You then should follow the procedure for torquing the spindle nut while rotating the hub, backing off, retorquing and then finding the right place to insert the key (you will probably have to back off the locking nut a bit to align one of the underside grooves in the spindle nut with the key-way in the spindle). DO NOT TRY TO TURN THE SPINDLE NUT WITH THE KEY IN PLACE!! DO NO FORGET TO INSERT THE LOCKING KEY WHEN YOU ARE DONE!!!. Again, get the Haynes manual for precise info – including the torque requirements – and photos. It will be a worthwhile manual for your to have! Good luck. I have just purchased a 1994 Explorer XLT 4X4 and am having some noise issues with the front end.  There is a loud hum that gets louder with distance driven, so appears to be heat related.  The noise lessens when the wheel is turned slightly to the left as in a lane change on the highway. Is there a description of how to set the preload on the wheel bearings.  I assume it is the left front bearing.  Can somebody direct me to a website with pictures of the assembly and detailed (idiot proof) explanations of the steps to take. Thank you for any help you can provide. Daniel J. Statman www.statmandesigns.com
